Sat, 05 April 2025, from 2 pm
Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg 10
On the occasion of the Polish EU Council Presidency, the European Alliance of Academies is organising a diverse programme to focus on the newly emerging art and cultural landscape in Poland. Artistic and discursive contributions are dedicated to the questions of how years of restrictions imposed by the PiS government affected artistic freedom and how the Polish art and culture scene is dealing with the political changes. The role of women in the cultural political transformation process is also being discussed.
Academy President Manos Tsangaris and Katarzyna Sitko, Deputy Director of the Polish Institute Berlin, will open the event. Agnieszka Holland reports in an interview with Volker Schlöndorff on her personal experiences in the fight against the nationalist policies of the PiS government. Acclaimed author Joanna Bator reads from her latest novel ‘Gorzko, Gorzko’.
Debates on the effects of the change of government on the cultural landscape and on the mobilisation of women in the political process with Anna Krenz, Jacek Dehnel, Robert Piaskowski, Anna Smolar, Weronika Adamowska and others will be accompanied by the sound performance Rebirth by Anna Sowa and the theatre performance JaWa by Turkowski & Nowacka.
To honour former Academy member Günter Grass, whose commitment to Polish art and culture is being continued by the Daniel Chodowiecki Foundation, literary texts relating to his native country will be read, followed by a discussion with former Academy Vice-President Kathrin Röggla. 13 April marks the 10th anniversary of Günter Grass‘ death.
Karolina Golimowska (Polish Institute Berlin) and Julia Hanske (Goethe-Institut Warsaw) will moderate.
An event organised in cooperation with Polish Institute Berlin and funded by the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation.
Kindly supported by Daniel Chodowiecki Foundation, Goethe-Institut Warsaw, Villa Decius and European Film Academy
