Round Table
Villa Decius, 28 lipca 1943 17a Street, 30-233 Kraków
22 September 2023, 11.30 am
Shortly before the elections to the Sejm (first chamber) in Poland in October, the members of the European Alliance of Academies are campaigning for the freedom of the arts and for cultural rights in Poland. As part of a study trip, the Polish Alliance partner Villa Decius is organising talks with artists and cultural workers whose artistic work is affected by political and financial pressure.
The talks will focus on the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre, the MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art, the Utopia House – International Empathy Centre and the Cricoteka, Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor. The directors of these Krakow institutions will show how political decision-makers increasingly influence artistic decisions.
The results will be discussed at a public roundtable on „Cultural Rights in Times of Political Change“ with representatives of political parties, independent cultural institutions and artists. Alexandra Xanthaki, UN Special Rapporteur on Cultural Rights, whose predecessor Karima Bennoune already published a country report on Poland in 2020, will share her findings in a keynote speech. An analysis of the election manifestos of the five largest parties will shed light on the status of arts and culture in Poland’s political landscape and how to ensure access to cultural rights. Alliance members contribute reports from other European countries where similar cultural policy developments can be observed.
With: Jan Tomasz Adamus, Krzysztof Głuchowski, Nele Hertling, Wolfgang Kaleck, Valerio Rocco Lozano, Jeanine Meerapfel, Aleš Šteger, Bartosz Szydłowski, Cécile Wajsbrot, Natalia Zarzecka and others as well as Alexandra Xanthaki, UN Special Rapporteur on Cultural Rights.
