Event in Solidarity with Szépírók Társasága
Central European University, Nádor u. 15, 1051 Budapest, Hungary
30 – 31 May 2023
The European Alliance of Academies sends a signal for the freedom of art with an event in Budapest in solidarity with the Society of Hungarian Authors Szépírók Társasága. The recent measures of the Hungarian government are increasingly endangering the country’s independent art and cultural scene. Drastic cuts in the annual budget have now also affected Szépírók Társasága, one of the founding members of the European Alliance of Academies.
The Society was established in 1997 to promote contemporary literature and democratic cultural policies. Its almost 400 members include some of the internationally most acclaimed Hungarian writers as well as cultural journalists and cultural managers from across Hungary, and also writers and critics of the Hungarian minorities and diasporas, along with international translators and scholars of Hungarian literature. More Information: Szépírók Társasága – Nyitóoldal (szepiroktarsasaga.hu)
With public discussions, artistic programmes, network events and talks with political decision-makers, the Alliance members want to draw attention to the political mechanisms that – although democratically legitimised – make numerous restrictions on artistic freedom possible in the first place, whether in Hungary or other European countries.
With María José Crespo, György Dalos, Péter Inkei, Simon Márton, Jeanine Meerapfel, Katharina Schultens, Bartosz Szydłowski, Balazs Szücs, Béla Tarr and digital contributions by Terézia Mora, Robert Wilson, George Szirtes
